Gift cards as trivial benefits

Reward your team with tax efficient gift cards

Looking for a simple way to reward employees while making the most of trivial benefits? Gift cards are a flexible and thoughtful way to show appreciation for birthdays, special occasions or a job well done. With our wide selection of gift cards, employees can choose a reward they’ll genuinely enjoy. Discover how gift cards can support your employee recognition strategy while making rewarding your team easy and convenient.

The HMRC rules

The HMRC rules

A birthday, a new baby, a colleague back after a hard few weeks. HMRC's trivial benefits exemption lets you mark moments like these tax-free, if every condition is met. Whether a trivial benefits gift card passes the HMRC test comes down to the official tax rules on trivial benefits. The gift must cost £50 or less, must not be cash or a cash voucher, must not reward work or performance, and must not be part of the employee's contract. Directors of close companies have a £300 cap per tax year. Rules can change and depend on the situation, so check the current HMRC guidance. For the wider picture, see our gift card regulations for companies.

Common mistakes

Common mistakes

Most slip-ups happen when a small gift quietly turns into something else.

  • Topping up one card all year. Regular top-ups can start to look like a payment rather than an occasional gift.
  • Paying staff back. Reimbursing something an employee bought themselves is generally not a trivial benefit, so give the card directly.
  • Tying the card to results. A card for hitting a target is a reward for performance and does not qualify.
  • Forgetting the director's cap. The £300 a year for directors of close companies is easy to miss in a team gift.

If you are unsure, check the current HMRC guidance before you order.

A small thank you should not turn into an afternoon of admin. You decide the value per card and who receives it, and we take care of the rest. Pick trivial benefits gift cards from single brands or let staff choose for themselves, add your logo and a message with personalised gift cards, and send one order for the whole team through bulk orders. Your account manager can talk you through the details, including paying on invoice. Buying from us does not settle the tax question, so keep the HMRC conditions in mind when you set the value.
