My gift card has expired: what can I do?

When a gift card passes its expiry date, the balance on the card is no longer accessible. This means you won’t be able to use it for purchases, whether online or in store. In most cases, the retailer or gift card provider is under no legal obligation to honour the card once the validity period has ended. From a technical standpoint, the issuer effectively deactivates the card, preventing any further transactions.

In the UK, there is no specific law that sets a minimum validity period for gift cards. However, the Consumer Rights Act 2015 does require that expiry terms are communicated clearly and fairly at the point of sale. If an expiry date was hidden in small print or not mentioned at all, there may be grounds to challenge it. 

Reputable retailers typically set validity periods between one and three years, giving recipients a reasonable window to redeem their gift card. It’s always worth checking the terms and conditions printed on the card or listed on the issuer's website.

Whether you can renew an expired gift card depends entirely on the issuer. There is no universal rule, and policies vary from one retailer to another. Some gift card providers are willing to extend the validity or reissue a new card with the remaining balance, particularly if you contact their customer service team and explain the situation politely. Other providers have strict policies and will not offer any extension once the card has passed its expiry date.

Your best first step is to contact the retailer or gift card provider directly. Many companies have a dedicated customer service team that handles gift card enquiries, and reaching out by email or phone is usually straightforward. Be sure to have your gift card number, purchase receipt (if available), and the expiry date to hand. 

Even if a full renewal is not possible, some retailers or providers can choose to offer a partial credit, a replacement card at a reduced value, or a goodwill gesture as a one-time exception. If the issuer or provider will not renew or extend your gift card, there is one other option to explore. You could try contacting your local Citizens Advice Bureau for guidance, especially if you believe the expiry terms were unfair or unclear. If none of these routes are successful, consider it a lesson learned and take steps to prevent it from happening again.

2. Set a reminder on your phone or calendar. Adding a reminder that notifies you a few weeks before the expiry date gives you plenty of time to decide how to spend your gift card. A simple notification can help you avoid losing the balance entirely.
3. Keep your gift cards in a visible place. Try to avoid storing the gift card in a drawer or part of your wallet where it might be forgotten about. Instead, store it somewhere you will see it regularly. A pinboard, fridge magnet, or a dedicated spot on your desk can serve as a daily visual reminder.
4. Use it sooner rather than later. The longer you wait to spend your gift card, the easier it is to forget about it. If you’re not sure what to buy, even a small purchase will reduce the chance of losing the full amount. You can always use the remaining balance later.
5. Register your gift card online if possible. Some retailers allow you to link a gift card to your account, which makes it easier to track the balance and expiry date. This also protects you if the physical card is lost or damaged.
6. Consider choosing gift cards with longer validity periods.
